Warning Signs of Alternator Failure that Mean You Should Visit Our Phoenix Auto ShopA malfunctioning alternator can cause the battery to become drained to the extent that your engine won't start and you end up stranded. This is why it's important to get to the shop at the first indication of an alternator problem. At Gab's Auto Repair, our local mechanics have extensive experience with fixing alternator and auto electric issues.

Common Symptoms of Alternator Trouble

One well-known sign of alternator failure is a dead battery. But just because your battery has died doesn't necessarily mean that a failing alternator is the reason. There are numerous other reasons why batteries die, such as parasitic draws, old age, loose/corroded connections, and—of course—leaving your headlights on. However, if there's no other clear-cut reason for why your battery is dead, then your alternator may be the culprit.

Another common warning sign of alternator trouble is that a dashboard warning light flashes on. This light may read ALT or GEN or illuminate in the shape of a small battery. Anytime a warning light turns on, it's important not to ignore it. By being proactive about getting to the shop, you'll have the best chance to avoid getting stranded.

A faulty alternator can also cause issues with the car's electrical accessories, such as power seats that are adjusting too slowly or power windows that take a long time to roll up or down. Modern vehicles are commonly equipped with computers that can determine which accessories should have their power supply reduced when alternator trouble is detected. This saves power for the vehicle's most essential electrical functions, like headlights. However, flickering/dimming headlights could also indicate alternator trouble.
