Common Signs of a Suspension Problem

If your car begins bouncing heavily whenever you go over any little bump in the road, then you’ve got a classic sign of a suspension issue. With a damaged spring, clunking sounds may emerge while driving over rough patches of road. Another sign of a bad spring is that your car sits lower in the affected corner.

In some cases, signs of suspension trouble will become apparent during the braking process. A bad suspension could cause your vehicle to take longer to come to a complete stop after you’ve begun braking. Suspension failure may also make it seem like your car is nose-diving when the brakes are engaged.

You’ll want to be aware of a few other common signs of trouble. For one, you may be driving with a faulty suspension if it feels like your car is drifting or swaying when you go around sharp corners. Also, a bad suspension can cause tire tread to wear down unevenly, which can then lead to the formation of bald spots on your tires. And if your shocks have oil leaking out onto them, then they’re probably due for replacement.

There’s also a quick test you can do that will help you get a better sense of whether your suspension is in rough shape. First, be sure that your vehicle is parked safely and at no risk of rolling. Then head to the front end and press down on it with all of your muscle. Rock it twice and then release. After that, go to the vehicle’s rear and do the exact same thing. Upon letting go, your car shouldn’t rock more than three times on its own. Rocking more than this suggests that there’s an issue with the suspension.
